Screen Equalizer will not sample automatically

I recently bought screen equalizer but when I choose the clean plate layer in the drop down menu, it does not automatically pick a sample color. Does any body know how to enable it to automatically pick a sample color. I do not think I am getting optimal results by choosing myself.
